Abstract: The intake levels of essential nutrients to meet the known nutritional needs of most healthy human beings as determined by the Committee on Dietary Allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board are presented. Allowances for energy, carbohydrates, fiber and fat, protein and amino acids, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, water, and electrolytes are covered. Determinaton of allowances, needs of special groups such as pregnant women and infants, and pertinent issues are discussed. Substances for which there is little data are also presented
