Summary
As indicated by his prospectus, the pioneer editor conceived of his newspaper as a moral agent, protector of liberties, preceptor to inquiring minds, "social friend" to those seeking entertainment, and advertiser of the resources of community and state. Too, most newspapers had political purposes, particularly after the flowering of the Jacksonian movement. This book deals both with the influence of the frontier upon journalism and with the impact of the editor upon the frontier. Professor Lyon investigates the difficulties of establishing and sustaining newspapers of the frontier where money was scarce, transportation and mail service undependable, and the competition keen. He discusses the lack of professional discipline and the lax business methods that frequently brought editors to disaster and provides a wealth of information about the founding and publication of the newspapers, methods of newsgathering, concepts of what was newsworthy, writing style, and newspaper format and printing. From this discussion the colorful personalities of many of the editors emerge - men whose individualism, itineracy, and vigorous expression were typical of the frontier
