- Summary
- The articles appearing in this special infectious disease issue of Nursing Clinics of North America reflect our current understandings and provide an update on a range of infectious diseases: their diagnoses, treatment, and the nursing management for infected individuals and individuals closely connected with them. The authors have a range of experience with infectious diseases. Throughout this issue, you will find updated or new concepts around infectious diseases, including lessons learned. These concepts include emerging new infectious diseases and emerging changes in known infectious diseases; demographics of at-risk individuals and patients, including gender fluidity, and the impact on assessment and treatment; antigenic shifts and antigenic drifts; and genome sequencing for prevention and management. Implications for practice is a theme threaded throughout these articles. With the last article in this issue, surrounding issues of emerging infectious diseases, we come full circle with ancient times. With the melting of glaciers, the possibility of Ice Age bacteria coming to life has given rise to the concern of new infectious diseases from Ice Age microorganisms.
